The Under 15 Soccer Team Crowned Provincial Champions

 Francis College soccer team did the school proud when they were crowned KwaZulu-Natal Coca-Cola U/15 Champions in a tournament held in Ulundi – northern KZN recently. The school reached the provincial finals after they were successfully crowned winners of the Pinetown District of the same tournament which was held in Anderson Park – Pinetown at the end of the Second Term. Therefore, the school soccer team participated in the tournament representing the Pinetown District.

The under 15 boys were crowned the Coca-Cola champions after they defeated Ilembe District (4-2) on penalties after the game ended (0-0) after full time. It was a thrilling final, as the entire tournament was characterised by a high standard of play and skills. A total of twelve districts participated in the provincial tournament.

On the road to the final the U15 boys in the group stages beat Sisonke District (2-1), drew with Mkhanyakude District 1-1 and defeated Uthungulu District (1-0). With these results the team proceeded to the semi-finals where they defeated Amajuba District (1-0).

The school Principal, Mr Nzama, said the team did the school proud and they are flying the school’s flag high. They have put our school on the map by winning the Provincial Coca-Cola tournament in Ulundi. He also commended the organisers of the tournament for giving the learners a chance to showcase their skills and talents.

Meanwhile, the school soccer coach, Mr Cyril Mthembu, said the tournament was organised by Coca-Cola and the aim is to help develop young talent so as to enable them to compete at the highest level. “The tournament is run at three distinct stages namely: District level, Provincial level and National level”, said Mr Mthembu, adding that the school is now set participate at the National level, which will be hosted by KZN.
