Learners at St Francis College have always been generous and active in giving blood to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) thus embracing the call to save lives. The school has been working closely with the SANBS for several years now.
The target set for the second term was 35 pints of blood and the school managed to collect 20 pints. This remarkable achievement could not have been possible without the unwavering support of Ms C. B. Mdluli who is the clinic controller at the school, coupled with cooperation of the Blood Representatives at school which include: Njabulo Dzanibe, Amahle Gumede, Siyethemba Ndlela, Sinqobile Mkhize, Akhona Ntanzi and Nokuthula Makhubu.
The SANBS in cooperation with the school organises regular blood donation drives where many learners participate. This never-ending demand for blood donation recognises that every minute of every day, someone needs a transfusion. For instance, donated blood could be used for cancer patients, accident victims and people with blood disorders. As a way to embrace the call to save lives the school has gone further to include the blood donation drives on the school calendar. Blood donation drives are held once in a term.
Some learners spoke to SFC News about their involvement in blood donation and this is what they said:
For Mayenziwe Gumede: I believe donating blood is a good deed in which you give a person a second chance of life. I find it as a way of giving back to the people in my country which gives me inner satisfaction. Donating blood is a good habit that everyone should embrace. That tiny prick you feel transforms you into a lifesaver.
Lungile Zulu: I donate blood with the aim of helping other people thus saving their lives. I feel it is the right thing to do in order to show love for the entire world. To donate blood is so significant because you get the chance to save your nation. As I am blood type O, I know that I am able to donate to anyone and that triggers my love for donating blood to save lives. As a blood donor I encourage everyone to please try by all means to donate for the people in need. The most beautiful feeling is seeing someone get second chance and be so happy because of the effort made.
Siphesihle Mbhele: I donate blood so that all those in need. It takes a few minutes to loose life, but also it takes a few minutes to draw blood and donate to save a life. I encourage you my fellow learners to donate: know how delicious the biscuits are and how painless the whole process is. How heroic you feel about yourself knowing, that you have done the right thing to save a life.
